Ice Skating Rinks in Utah to Take Your Family

December 3, 2018 By Melisa

Five Family Friendly Ice Skating Rinks in Utah
January is National Ice Skating Month, so lace up those skates and have fun with your kids!

Ever wonder what ice skating rink you should take your family to? To figure that out, I headed to five different ice skating rinks in Utah to see which ones offer the most family friendly environment.

I have to admit, I hadn’t ice skated in a very long time. My kids… had never gone. So, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I can honestly say, we had a blast! Heading to our 3rd ice skating rink I had some confident little ice skaters.

Once they got the hang of it and felt comfortable on the ice they had a ball! My oldest son had so much fun. He’s found a new found love for ice skating. I was so surprised at just how much fun I had too. So, if I can do it, I know you can too! Here’s a look at all the places we went.

Peaks Ice Arena – Provo

Peaks Ice Arena – Provo

This arena offers a fantastic ice skating experience in Provo. It offers year-round public skating. They have walkers for kids (if needed), and it’s a great size indoor rink.

At the rink, they also do hockey and a lot of other activities for kids to get involved. After we were done skating the kids had fun watching the hockey games going on.

A fun program they offer is called Small and Tall classes. It’s for parents and little children and is offered on Thursdays at 10 am. The class is only $3 and it teaches your little ones, and mom and dad too, how to skate.

Peaks Ice has a great concession area, too. That’s a huge plus as you definitely work up an appetite skating. A nice cup of hot chocolate after is so great. Their hot chocolate was one of the best I’ve ever had.

Public skating times do vary so be sure to check their website for details. We went on a Tuesday night, and it was public skating from 7-9pm.

Pricing: $5 for adults, $4 for kids (4-11), and $4 for seniors. Skate rentals are $2.

Utah Olympic Oval- Kearns

Utah Olympic Oval- KearnsThis is a great family friendly ice rink open year round in Kearns. It’s known as the Fastest Ice on Earth, as it holds the most World Olympic Records.

My kids loved them all but will tell you that this was their favorite rink. It’s set up on a track, so it’s an oval, and it keeps the flow going in an organized fashion, which is less intimidating.

The Oval has seats around it so you can jump off the ice and sit at any time. This makes it the best ice skating rink to go to with your little ones or babies. In addition, they have walkers to rent and even allow you to skate and push your stroller! It makes it convenient for mom having your baby right there with you.

Events:

The Oval has fun, and FREE, Public US Speedskating event on Jan 5th and Jan 8th and have other events throughout the year. Check their website for hours and activities and classes they offer.

Pricing: Adults are $5, kids and seniors are $3.50. Skate rentals are $3.

County Ice- Murray

County Ice- Murray

My kids had their favorite ice rink and I have mine. This was my favorite. It’s indoor and also open year round for ice skating.

County Ice has that great hometown comfortable feel and the rink is awesome. It’s conveniently located in Murray right by shopping and restaurants.

The ice was perfectly kept and great for skating. I feel like I got my ice skating wings here and had so much fun. The kids did great too and it wasn’t extremely packed when we went in the afternoon ice skating session. If anyone needs a break, they have great seating areas just off the ice and bleachers above the ice, too.

For those wanting to learn, County Ice offers classes and more as well. Convenient concessions are available right off the rink. The prices are very reasonable. So, grab some hot cocoa nachos, pretzels, and more!

My friend and I went and together had 6 kids. She had her little ones who weren’t completely comfortable skating. So they’d sit on a bench right off the rink and took turns on the ice. This rink doesn’t offer walkers. So, keep that in mind if you’re taking new skaters.

Pricing: It’s $4 for skating (age 3-5 $1) and skate rentals are $2. It’s great family fun for a great price. You can find more information here.

Holiday Ice Rink at Station Park – Farmington

Holiday Ice Rink at Station Park – Farmington

This is a specialty outdoor ice rink at the Shops of Station Park in Farmington. It is open until Jan 29th. The location is, of course, ideal because it is in the middle of great shopping, movies, and restaurants. You can even send dad to ice skate while mom checks out a few stores.

The rink is smaller, but my kids still had a blast. It’s not crazy intimidating and you can feel great for circling the rink. I posted a picture skating on my Instagram stories and my friend commented, “This isn’t in Utah is it?” I told her, “Yes, its at Station Park.” And she responded, “It looks so magical”.

It really was great and the kids had a blast. Right off the rink, they have a yummy soda shop Fizz and Café Torrino for Hot chocolate. We loved sitting and getting drinks afterward. This is a fun one to check out. You can get more information here.

Pricing: Kids are $4, adults are $6

Gallivan Center Ice Rink – Salt Lake City

Gallivan Center Ice Rink – Salt Lake City

This is Salt Lake’s iconic outdoor Ice skating Rink in Downtown. It’s outdoors and closes at the end of February.

Skating at night with the lights of the city buildings and trees lit up with Christmas lights is amazing. It’s so festive and magical.

We went with our kids and our friends. It was a fun night out in Salt Lake City.

Afterward, we went out to eat at R & R BBQ. We had so much fun, and it makes for a fun night with your kids. They have spotlights out that turn the ice different colors and play amazing music over the speakers while you skate.

All the money they earn when the ice rink is running goes back into the events they put on through the year. So, it’s fun to support the local community. It truly was a magical experience to ice skate there.

Pricing: Pricing includes skate rentals. Adults are $9, children (4-12) and seniors are $8. Children 3 and under are free. Groups of 25 or more receive a $1 discount.

Last Impressions

My kids loved every minute of ice skating. So, whether you’re new to ice skating or a seasoned skater, you’ll have fun at all of these venues. With a little practice on the ice, you can totally become an ice skater and enjoy it that much more!
